Turner (All that Glittered, 1990) afresh turns a awful eye on Motown's seamy cast side, this time on the anarchic careers of Temptations singers Eddie Kendrick, Dennis Edwards, and the backward David Ruffin. Befriended in 1966 at age 12 by Flo Ballard of the Supremes, Turner served as dresser, architecture man, and assignment boy for Mary Wilson and her ``fake Supremes'' in the aboriginal 1980's and, later, as alley administrator and abettor for the countless combinations of above Temptations as they tried, generally pathetically, to achieve their absent glory. Admitting that adamant Motown architect Berry Gordy, ``one of the better accepted pimps in the world,'' acclimated him to spy on some of the performers, Turner additionally doesn't abolish rumors of his diplomacy with both Gordy and Eddie Kendrick. The columnist tells (and, in some cases, retells) all, from the aboriginal canicule of Diana Ross and her now allegorical appetite to Paul Williams's 1973 suicide; from Gordy's declared battle with the mob to the sad post-Motown belief of Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, and Marvin Gaye--whom Turner claims to accept helped ``dress in drag,'' complete with wigs and changeable underwear. The infighting, backstabbing, carousing, and atrocity of the Motown stars accept a lot of absorption here, accent by David Ruffin's biologic problems and his afterlife by credible balance in June 1991. Ruffin's funeral, presided over by Louis Farrakhan and paid for by Michael Jackson (Turner takes time to appraisal the floral arrangements), became a cadaverous bazaar as Kendrick was arrested for declining to pay adolescent abutment and the corpse's patent- leather-and-rhinestone shoes were removed for altar in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Turner does lots of bedraggled laundry, little of it advancing clean- -and he pays no austere absorption either to Motown's music or to its role in the history of the American ball business.
